OMG, it's been FOREVER I know.. Let me re-introduce myself, I'm Brandi the self-proclaimed Foodie, Oenophile, Tango dancer, World traveler and of course Co-owner of Embrace Sweets. It's my pleasure to meet you (again). Piacera! So what's going on? Well how about I just start at the beginning - the brownie biz has definitely been kicking our butts, but going well. We've taken our act on the road and started participating in events across the state. A lot of fun, a lot of new exposure and as always very time consuming.

In this wonderful way however I've discovered quite a bit about myself, our business, our customers and what it really means to live. No matter the city we're in, brownies are brownies and everyone who tries one of ours 9 out 10x will have the same expression. Utter pleasure. This is a truly wonderful thing. Over the past few months Mum and I haven't had much time for us - we've deprived you from the glorious foods in LA and reading about our indulgent experiences. We've seen maybe two movies in 4-5 months and well I just haven't had a really good glass of wine in one to many nights. It's really a shame; but I tell you this, it has not been in vain! :-)

I'm determined more than ever to follow my heart; to eat, drink, laugh, love, play and indulge whenever possible in life. I recently came across another blog called, The Bleeding Espresso, I am hooked - it's about this woman who packs up her life and moves to Italy. I have often thought of this, and although at the 'current' moment that is not an option it is quite spectacular living vicariously through her and her words. She speaks about how Italy taught her to slow down, to breathe to take a moment (be in the moment) and I do believe that is something we all are guilty of not doing. It's so important and we know this but some how work and responsibilities gets in the way. What I really like about her blog is that she's honest and she doesn't call her life, La Dolce Vita - no, she calls it La (Agro)Dolce Vita (The Bittersweet Life). I love that, because no one is saying it needs to be all sweet, all the time- taking the sweet and the (not so) sweet is what gives us character and strength.

I read a quote the other day that said something to the tone of, "You can try and change the world (everyone else) or you can change yourself... do what's easiest!" I elect to do what's easiest and Be The Change.

It's really amazing when you truly and honestly make a decision to do something- you can feel it in your entire body. It's almost like the world shifted a bit and you're not quite in the same place but everything is still there and looks familiar. So what's the first step? I'm making a list, and top of my list is to 1. Learn Italian! I know I know many of you are probably thinking "but you live in LA, learn Spanish!" NO! My heart wants Italian, my soul is screaming for Italian and ultimately I will be in Italy and Italian will come in quite handy.

2. Get back to Yoga - Mum and I finished a great festival last weekend down near San Diego and on our way back we stopped in this great little town called Cardriff-by-the-Sea (literally) and I discovered the most beautiful, wonderful Yoga store/studio. Jois Yoga - It's an Ashtanga studio (which if you live here in LA and practice you know how difficult it is to find one) and it's co-owned by the Sri K.Pattabhi Jois foundation. Jois passed away May 18th, 2009 and his grandson (R. Sharath Jois) is continuing the tradition and teachings. The studio had such an amazing energy to it, it instantly felt warm and welcoming and was obviously ready to do some yoga. I couldn't stay but I did buy a DVD of one of his classes. I never got a chance to practice w/ Pattabhi Jois but watching him and his grandson on the DVD was definitely the next best thing.

3. Reconnect w/friends - it's so easy to Poke on Facebook, Tweet a shout out even send an email but I don't know about you but actually making a plan to meet up with a friend feels almost like pulling teeth. My family is very limited and my friends are my sisters and brothers and their kids my nieces and nephews - so being a part of their lives and staying connected is 'molto importante' very important.

Alright (Tutto bene) that's what I'm going to leave you with today. I hope this sparks something in some of you who also feel over worked, stressed and just need a change. You have to be it for yourself. You have to make the decision but make it with intention.

Who could have imagined that little green men are sneaking overly indulgent brownies into their sacks, well if you've tried our Stout Brownies you'd would have. This week we are debuting our On Tap brownie featuring Guinness Extra Stout. Beer? Yes a beer brownie.

So what can you expect? Well this brownie is slightly cakey with a cocoa, oakey taste. The Guinness comes through in the end and is even more evident if you slightly warm this Embrace Sweets brownie before enjoying. Lastly we've drizzled Ghirardelli dark chocolate and caramel sauce on top.

Holiday Craziness

Hello my fellow all things butter lovers, forgive me for my lack of post - trust me this is a good sign. Things have been absolutely crazy busy around here and Embrace Sweets is making some major head way. The holiday season is full swing now and we are busy shipping Brownie Samplers all over the world. So far we've sent out almost 500 samples since Halloween and many more orders coming in daily. We shipped our first international order to Hong Kong last month and we are proud to announce they arrived; fresh, in tact and were enjoyed by many.

We have a new logo, which we'll be unveiling soon and this month is Unique LA the premier holiday gift show (Dec. 11th & 12th), Downtown Los Angeles.

There is so much going on, and we still have to find to time to breathe. So bear with me this next month I promise to get back to blogging (and eating) very soon.

Closer Than Going to Mexico

I've been planning a wonderful, exotic, Mexican vacation for the past 10 years, well to be honest I've been planning an European, South American and Mediterranean vacation too, I know one of these days I'll actually be booking the tickets. In the meantime I may have found a temporary solution (or better yet quick fix) for my Mexican vacay blues. Ricky's Tacos.

They are cheaper than a vacation package, arrive faster than the actual flight and can instantly teleport you to the desired little Baja hut and/or Cantina of your wildest dreams.

I stumbled upon Ricky's not by accident, and anyone who has been will tell you why. They are close to impossible to find if you don't know what you're looking for. Ricky's is well hidden in the parking lot behind a beauty salon in Silverlake. Blue tarps and rickety chairs and tables make up this faux-restaurant. The food speaks for itself and as you're enjoying your meal you find you've completely forgotten that just behind the wrought iron gates is a busy, noisy street and your table setting consist of plastic cups, forks and Styrofoam plate.

Ricky's Taco, are freshly made when you order, large pieces of fresh fish are dipped in secretly seasoned batter (that in my opinion, could put the Colonel to shame) and deep fried in large wok-style pans until a perfect shade of golden reminiscent of the sunsets you're sure to experience along the mexican coastline. You don't need tarter sauce, cocktail sauce or anything else for that matter - the tacos are amazing just as they are.

Until experiencing Ricky's I was a fan of Baja Fresh fish tacos and of course Poquito Mas; I still enjoy these places as well but they have now become my second and third choice when you just can't make it to Ricky's.

Who said you couldn't take a mini beach vacay during your lunchtime? I'm planning one today! :-)

Quite possibly the wonderful conclusion to an awful movie experience.

In short, mum and I went to see The American..........I don't want to talk about it. :-( Ok, i'll say this and this only.. "George, really? What were you thinking with this one?" I mean it's George Clooney I just expected soooooooo much more out of him and this was no where near my expectation level. Even if you told me to imagine a bad movie staring Gorgeous George, I couldn't fathom this picture. Ok, I'm done venting. Seriously. :-)

BUT! the pain au chocolat and vanilla cappuccino that followed was fantastic. Breadbar, is one of the sweetest little establishments I've been too. The service left a little to be desired but I figure they are just trying to give you a real European experience. Mum and I visited the one located in the Century city Shopping plaza and we were pleasantly surprised. To be honest though anything after the torture we endured for 1hr and 45sec would be a relief.

Cute little atmosphere, beautiful day and as always great company. Luv you mum! :-)

It's times like this that I wish we (Embrace Sweets) had our own little bakery/cafe/brownie boutique. The idea has crossed our minds more than once and the impulse is strong to go forward, I suppose the only question is where? Where in ALL of LA do we set up shop? Perhaps you can help me with that question. :-)

Meanwhile, The Village is the inspiration for this blog. Located in Atwater Village (right after Los Feliz) is this wonderful place. I've passed by many times and for some reason just never had the time or urge to stop in. Boy was this a mistake, knowing now what I've been missing out on is such a disappointment, I should really know better by now. This lovely bakery/cafe has been around for many years but only recently been taken over by new management and what a success it has been.

Mum and I ventured over one early Saturday morning for breakfast, greeted with smiles, and sugary sweet attitudes we ordered at the counter and made ourselves cozy in the corner - close enough to the bakery case to drool and be a voyeur but far enough way for no one else to notice. For an appetizer we shared their famous doughnut muffin, vanilla cappuccino and hot chocolate; for the main dish I had my favorite, a BLT with eggs, Mom munched down on The Village Pancakes with warm maple syrup.

A very simple, not complicated, easy-going breakfast; something you could make at home but you'd miss all the atmosphere. I have to admit though the doughnut muffin was amazing, its sweet, cakey and light - true and imagine a doughnut hole but the shape of a cupcake completely rolled in cinnamon-sugar. Perfection!

Lastly, I also love that running around with the staff was Barbara- you could tell she'd been there most the morning, her hair was a little frazzled, she had flour on her face and her apron was already covered but in between sticking things in their large bread oven, pulling dough from the proofer and setting up with pastry in the display case she smiled and had a look of complete contentment and satisfaction. That is always the sure sign of happiness and success. That's what I most look forward to if (and when) we do open up our own place. Stay tuned.. :-)

The Push and Pull of Life

I had a revelation last night and it came from my first night in Intermediate Tango class. We practiced walking, forward and back, turns and movement with each other without using our arms. There was no tango embrace not even the practice hold, we had only to rely on our core and support each other without tipping over (or dropping) the other person. Pressed chest to chest you had to match the force you gave with the force your partner was giving to you; you couldn't lean on them, they weren't there to support you, not really that was up to you; but, they were there to guide you and help you execute the move.

I realized three things last night:
1. My core is pretty weak.
2. I relay to much on my hands instead of trusting myself and my body to do and give what it instinctively knows
3. and lastly, I realized this one class represents so much of life (at least my own).

Life itself is a push and pull, in our daily lives we give to others and want (or at least hope) to receive the same in return. We push against the things we don't want but we also push ourselves towards those that we do. We give ourselves fully when it's something that resonates with us and we protect ourselves when people are trying to put their 'stuff', their energy onto us. Throughtout all of this however do this with faith. Faith in ourselves, faith in those that we follow and faith that we won't fall. Much like our practice we had to have faith that we could work together, to come to a mutual agreement, to complete the process only using our own strength and body weight. I always imagined the embrace was the most important part, the way you express your intention and your passion to your partner; but now I realize that's just the icing. If you can do all of that without holding your partner you've entered a whole new realm, a whole new dimension of trust and connection that is even more powerful.

Tango is so much more than just a dance. It's a language, it's an expression, it's an outlet and a meditation as my favorite teacher Stefan says. I'm reminded every time I step into class that I'm not just here to learn a new dance move, but I'm here to be apart of something and I'm here to grow spiritually, emotionally and as a person. A person who can tango and express herself in whole different light.

There's a Carb in Heaven For Me

Is it just me or all of the best things in life centered around breads, pasta, sugar and of course butter? As my Mum says, "Why would anyone want to live without it, you'd might as well just shoot yourself" - ok, so maybe that's a little harsh but come on you have to agree (at least a little). We've been led to believe that these things are 'bad for us' but how can anything be bad in "Moderation". If you have moderation you can have anything. I suppose the challenge comes in with maintaining the moderation part.

So if I share a blueberry scone and hot tea in the morning, have a small slice of tomato basil foccacia bread with my lunch (of fresh made pasta and sliced chicken) and for dinner salivate and enjoy a moderate portion of butterscotch bread pudding does that count as moderation? Probably not.

If you've had the pleasure to read the book (or see the movie) Eat Pray Love, then you'll know exactly what I'm getting at. The main character of the book spends three months in Italy and makes the most wonderful statement that 'No carb will be left behind'. I couldn't have said it better myself. Fully taking advantage of a wonderful opportunity and the fresh country, she indulges in gelato, fresh made pastas and tomato sauces, sautéed in butter everything and of course pizza! Oh, the pizza - I'm convinced that in heaven there is an endless supply of all your favorite foods just waiting for you and to make sure you never get tired of them, you have the memory of a goldfish, so every time you eat something it's like the first time. Amazing.

I am in awe sometimes when I step back and listen to my conversations about food, when did this happen? How did this happen? I was born in Georgia but raised in California, as a child I was a very picky eater but what I did love was my Grandmother and Great-grandmothers' cooking. Southern fried chicken breast, collard greens, sweet potatoes and pound cakes. This type of cooking wasn't for everyday meals but reserved for Sunday dinners, holidays, and special occasions. But it wasn't until my late 20's that I really started to appreciate food and venture out to new cuisine. My idea of 'good food' or even just food I'd eat was so limited, I was so fearful and timid. Even when I started traveling through Southeast Asia, South America and the Caribbean, I kick myself now because I completely missed out. Well, on the other hand the upside is I just have to go back and re-experience those places correctly.

Perhaps food has just gotten better with time, like wine, olive oil and canned fruit; I do believe there is some truth to this. Over the last decade so many culinary milestones and advances have been made in the industry. All these new types of salts, sugars, olive oil combinations, herbs and spices; different cuts of meats, hybrid vegetables and fruits, even down to the style and way things are cooked has evolved. What was once unthought of, impossible or just considered 'wrong' is now copied and exploited all over the place. Traditional cooking and ceremonial cooking has found a place in chic, boutique restaurants and supper clubs - eating has become fun, fashionable and interesting. There are more food critics, bloggers (such as myself) and so-called experts than ever before. Culinary academy's are popping up everywhere, people want to be the chefs they see on reality shows and Food Network, being just a mere 'cook' doesn't hold the fame or light anymore but to be a Chef the possibilities are endless.

Last night my Mum reminded me that when I was young and had a bedtime I used to always think that I was missing out on something, that while I slept she and all the other parents were partying, dancing and having a grand ole time. Now I know that wasn't the case, she'd be up working late, watching TV or preparing for the next day and then she'd retire as well. Well, now things are different, if I had kids they would definitely believe something was going on while they slept. There might be a few friends over sharing a great new bottle of wine and the latest gossip, mummy and daddy might be making some exotic dinner for two and sharing a slice of Tequila Lime Cheesecake, or maybe I just might find solice in an amazing scoop of Salted Caramel Vanilla Gelato. Who really knows, but I can tell you this; food is definitely more apart of my life, my friends and anyone I associate with than I could have ever imagined years ago. I can't even imagine not caring about what I put in my mouth or where I'm getting my ingredients from. It's a daily conversation but in the most wonderful way, it's not stressful, it's not about dieting or calorie counting; it's about moderation, savoring and honestly just being present and enjoying what you're enjoying. I believe if you do that, you can't overeat, you can't eat the wrong thing and you can't finish a meal and forget what you ate just a few hours before.

Make every meal count. Appreciate every taste bud. Savor every bite.

Now, I don't necessarily pride myself on having a knack for barbecuing or even being a BBQ aficionado, but I do believe that like most of us I know good BBQ when I come across it. Mom on the other hand is hands down the BBQ queen and if she says it's the best well then you know you have a winner.

The Best Baked Beans!

Next in line for our weekend food challenge is The Smokin Joint on West 3rd St in West Hollywood. So, off the bat I was a little concerned, they call themselves a "Fine California BBQ" restaurant, now doesn't that seem to be an oxymoron? I mean Fine + BBQ I can't imagine the two going together. Isn't BBQ supposed to be sticky, messy and fun? Since when do you eat BBQ with a knife and fork with delicate white napkins on your lap? Well, I am happy to report that Smokin may be 'Fine' but they are still firmly rooted in the BBQ tradition. We ordered the Catfish (appetizer) 15 hour brisket, baby backs, mac 'n' chez, loaded baked potato and of course baked beans, the baked beans by the way were boasted as being The Best in LA, obviously they haven't tasted mine. Their sauces were superb, you actually get three to choose from (vinegar based, Carolina style and a special made in house) and they come out separately so you can add as much or as little to your dish. The meats were tender and well flavored, my brisket was cooked for over 15 hours and as it literally melted in my mouth I agree it was worth the effort. Nothing ruins a good meal (especially BBQ) faster than feeling like you're fighting with your meat - the constant pull and tug when even a knife seems to dull and give up over the effort is a sure fire deal breaker.

What was also a great, unexpected treat were the pickles they accompany every dish. At first I just over looked them and pushed them to the side, but the owner actually bought them to my attention and insisted I try them. Shockingly they were fantastic. They are sweet, firm, crisp and best of all made in house. They finish off the meal perfectly and could also be great sides on their own.

Smokin's location is ideal, located walking distance from the Beverly Center there is tons of parking and steady foot traffic, it's also a welcomed addition to the same ole food places that have been in the area for years. It was time the area got 'spiced' up a bit. :-)

The owner (a former musician) also keeps true to tradition with the number of autographed guitars hanging on the walls, pictures of musicians and the large television wall display featuring concerts such as Live8, Coachella , and many others.

You're guaranteed great food, great music and great service - could you really ask for more?

This post will be short and sweet, I just want to give a shout out to Pitfire Pizza for being so cool, so unique and so on top of it! This small chain has been around for about a minute but they are making huge waves and setting all kinds of standards in service, quality and aesthetics. I frequently visited the Mar Vista location before my tango lesson - I go to unwind and prepare myself for my next challenge, conquering tango! This location is always bustling, very popular among: families and singles - it's perfect for the kids and also a date night. The wine list is great (I recommend the Cab $8 glass), and don't get me started on the food. What happens when you combine sincerity, sweetness, compassion, passion, a zest for life and a true unending, unconditional love? You get Sayeh and Avesta, a couple that couldn't have been written together better in any play or movie; a love that couldn't be described by any of the best writers (or bloggers) and a romance that not even the most romantic could have dreamt up. Simply because, their love exceeds and extends past what any one of us attending their wedding have ever known.

I've known Sayeh since high school and even then she was the kind of friend and person you wanted to know; sweet, thoughtful and always up for a good time. We were the three musketeers (Sayeh, Helena and myself), all of us good students, unique in our own ways and like most teenagers, just trying to find our way. I still can't believe it's been 10 years since high school and although a lot of time has passed and we're all in very different stages in our lives, I still see us as those 16 year-olds.

August 28th, 2010 marked a new stage in Sayeh's life, she married the love of her life and best friend, Avesta Rasouli - becoming no longer just Sayeh a girlfriend and fiancee, but Mrs. Sayeh Rasouli. I have never seen her happier. She and Avesta met nine years ago in a classic case of, 'hey I have this guy I want to introduce you to!' and they have been inseparable since (minus a 29 minute break up some years before). Friends and family will tell you that they are the perfect match for each other, they compliment each others strengths and support each others weaknesses. They are what all love affairs are made of and what even the most cynical will tell you they secretly envision for themselves. I can attest to this.

Being at the their wedding, watching the ceremony and just being a witness to such magic was both terrifying and wonderful all at the same time. I felt as if for the first time I was witnessing what true love is and also realizing that I myself have never known it. I believe there are two types of love, emotional love and unconditional - we all strive to give and hopefully receive the latter but so often it is the emotional love that guides us. Emotional love can change depending on circumstances, situations and sometimes even moods; but unconditional is just that, no explanation needed. I cried....I cried like all young, single women do at weddings and wondered if I'd ever find myself here one day. The cynic in me said, 'unlikely', 'maybe', the hopeful in me said, 'abso-freakin-lootly if you want it and go after it'.

You see, I realized last night that love is not easy or easily earned (very much like trust). It took Sayeh and Avesta a bit to get there, but they started out as friends and the love evolved into so much more. They are lovers, companions and the bestest of friends. I believe that is something we all want. Nine years is a long time but then it's not, unfortunately it's longer than most marriages these days and yet my friends have just now reached that point. It's easy to walk away when you're "just dating" but when you're married and have that contract, things are different. I commend and admire Sayeh and Avesta for truly putting in the time, the energy, the commitment every single day to being together and accepting nothing less from each other at the same time. They have shown me what real, true love is and every single one of us in that room last night felt it. We were embraced by it and overwhelmed.

I know this post may seem a little heavier and definitely more personal than usual, but I have a feeling there are a lot of you out there who feel the same. Who may still be that 16 year old just looking for their way: in life, in a career, in love; and perhaps you're with someone right now or you yearn to be, I just want to share with you what I learned.

Love takes work, it doesn't come easy and even when it seems to (love at first site) there is still that daily commitment and the promise of unconditional love. Love is not picky or choosing what you'll accept in that person but taking the person entirely. Love is when you're dancing in a room of 300 people and the only person you see is the one holding you. Love is even holding your daughter and realizing that although she will always be your baby she is now a wife and trusting that you did good by her. But lastly love is such a powerful force that when you're around it, when you're in its presence, you know it without a doubt and all you can do is sit back and try and breathe.

To Sayeh and Avesta if you're reading this I want you to know; I am so honored to have been a guest at your wedding. To have seen and experienced such loveliness. Thank you for showing me the answer to the question I've asked all my life, "how will I know it's love, that it's real?". Thank you for filling my heart with so much love last night that I thought it would burst and lastly thank you for such beautiful memories and a dream of one day knowing I can have that too. I love you guys and I wish you all the continued happiness in this world and beyond.

******* The Story******

The Liège waffle (from the city of Liège, in eastern Belgium) is a richer, denser, sweeter, and chewier waffle. Invented by the chef of the prince-bishop of Liège in the 18th century as an adaptation of brioche bread dough, it features chunks of pearl sugar, which caramelizes on the outside of the waffle when baked. It is the most common type of waffle available in Belgium and is prepared in plain, vanilla and cinnamon varieties by street vendors across the nation.

In Europe, this waffle is one of few products prepared to be eaten “on the go”. It is typically served in a paper wrapping and eaten with the hands…no plate or fork required. Delicious, popular and portable… The Liège waffle is a sweet snack that can be enjoyed any time of day or night.

I personally haven't had the pleasure of visiting Belgium just yet, but with the help of a good friend, Jean-François (Taste of Belgium) and new friends RJ and Jean (Shaky Alibi), I can pocket that plane fair and just visit their locations. In 2006 I met Jean-François, while living in Cincinnati, OH (a place almost as foreign as Belgium) and had heard about these waffles that were 'out of this world'. A true Belgium waffle that came on wax paper instead of a plate and you didn't need to drench in maple syrup or honey. I was intrigued, and from the first taste to the last I couldn't believe that such a thing existed but more importantly why had I not heard of it before. The fact is there are few places in the states that serve, let alone know what a Liège waffle is. While these delicious treats are common on the streets of eastern Belgium and surrounding areas they are completely absent here. Well, I think that's about to change.

When I moved back to LA I have to admit that the one heart string being pulled was my craving for more waffles; where would I go now? Would there be a place in LA that could make them just as good? Or should I just buy a Liège waffle iron (a special iron exported from Belgium) and beg Jean-François for the recipe, exclaiming that it's life or death and I just can't part with them. Well, lucky for me I didn't have to, Jean-François began shipping them all over the country shortly there after, now in a matter of 2 days or less (depending on shipping) I can be enjoying my waffles in the comfort of my LA home with the wonderful LA weather that comes with it. Now if only I can predict when I'd be craving one, I could be a step ahead in the ordeing process. The one downside, you are getting them a couple of days later and even though Jean-François provides you with excellent reheating instructions, there is NOTHING like fresh Liège waffles, NOTHING.

Enter, Shaky Alibi! What a great name right? Shaky Alibi is actually a Liège wafflery, just opened in the heart of Mid-city, located on Beverly Blvd and Martel they are open daily. I came across Shaky completely by accident, I had seen their signage up for a bit, that they were opening soon and all that jazz but nothing stated what it was going to be, my thoughts: a bar. It's a great name for a bar, some seedy little joint with bad lighting, big booths and lots of wanna be un-questionable's hiding in the shadows. So imagine my amazement when I read online that they are indeed open and serving LA's first Liège waffles. I was stoked! I immediately grabbed my bag, keys and mom and we rushed over to try this new hot spot out.

Of course I was skeptical, I had been spoiled in Cincinnati, Jean-François was a true Belgs and was after all the first to introduce me to these bready delights; none the less I went with an open heart, mind and empty stomach. RJ (the owner) and his wife, Jean - promptly greeted us at the door, you're instantly welcomed in and told to sit where ever you like (which at this point was only at the waffle bar), they are very chatty, excited and eager to serve you, educate you and most importantly get your feedback. I think that's what I loved the most about the place, RJ and his crew are so excited about this venture and genuinely want to teach the world (or at least LA to start) about these waffles and what makes them so special. I could already tell that few of his customers walked in knowing the difference between a Liège waffle and a Belgium waffle, he was genuinely surprised that we knew of them and had eaten them before. It totally made his day.

We ordered the waffles topped with a Specklous spread (think Nutella mixed with rice crispy), two cappuccinos and sat patiently watching the process unfold. RJ reached into the fridge and I was so happy to see the exact same dough that I'd watched François place on the iron so many times before. I knew we were off to a good start.

The irons were the same large, heavy and stainless steel. He placed the dough in the center, lowered the lid on top and the heat is what melts and flattens the waffle. The whole process takes about 4- 5 minutes and two waffles can be done at a time. Don't go in expecting MacDonald's quick service, but thats not what you'd want anyway, right? Theses waffles are made when you order and are piping hot when you get them, there are no microwaves, no heat lamps and waffles aren't stacked to the ceiling waiting for you to come in. I asked RJ if this had been a problem, being that in LA like many other parts of the country we are impatient, demanding and want what we want ASAP, he kindly stated- those that appreciate what they're getting and know that care, love and time went into making this item, they don't mind the wait. If you just let people know before hand that everything is prepared fresh, that usually helps ease the tension and anxiety when you see a long line.

Shaky Alibi is a success and although Taste of Belgium and Jean-François will always hold a special place in my heart, I'm happy to know that there is someplace equally as fantastic a little closer to home.

Wine Tasting for Los Angeles (aka WTFLA)

So y'all know how much I love good glass of wine (pretty much with any meal) I'm very European that way! Well my friends at WTFLA are hosting another event in August, this time at POURTAL!!! Yeah! Pourtal is an awesome spot in Santa Monica - they have wine 'on tap' literally, they're close to the beach and have great food too. The WTFLA will be held August 25th for more information check it below.

I will be there of course, volunteering and pouring. If you are interested in volunteering or joining a Wine social group contact WTFLA below. Another great resource is Meetup.com Simply type in your interest and dozens (if not hundreds) of groups meeting in your area will pop up. Most are free to join and meet regularly. Not Your Average Flour

Attention! Attention! Attention Los Angeleons, Magnolia Bakery has finally opened - please calmly take your place in line and wait patiently for your banana pudding, home style cakes, delicate cupcakes and sinfully rich cheesecakes. There will be more than enough to go around. Thank you.

Now if only all emergency drills sounded so sweet. Well my dears it's true, New York's famed Magnolia Bakery has finally made it's way to Los Angeles (it's only taken oh about, 14 years), but I have to say it might have been worth the wait. Magnolia (LA) opened July 17th and is situated on the corner of Orlando and 3rd St in West Hollywood. The location is absolutely beautiful, reminiscent of a old time french bakery or country kitchen (I realize how totally different those two comparisons are) with it's pale blues, antique cake boxes and Lazy Suzy's. The space is actually quite large, in part because of the open floor plan allowing a full view of the kitchen including ovens, work space and it's sugar and flour coated workers.

You walk in and you can't help but smile, there's something about walking into a room filled with sugar, chocolate, puddings and sprinkles that make you get all giddy and childlike. Magnolia and places like it have become the new 'sweets shop' but for adults.

So, to get to the goods. Mum and I ordered a plethora of goods, we started with the famous caramel cupcake, ventured to the white chocolate macadamia cheesecake and ended with the famed banana pudding. A sugar coma would definitely have been in our sights had everything been as fabulous as I had hoped. I must say I was a little disappointed by the cupcake- the cupcake itself was dry and very dense, the frosting was more like whipped frosting (very light and a little bland), what saved it was the caramel sauce which I actually wish there was more of to add to the flavoring the cake lacked. Jumping ahead the banana pudding was absolutely to die for, we ordered the small (about an 8 oz container) and mum and I were fighting over it to the last spoonful. The pudding was firm yet smooth, sweet, bananany (that's a new word) and of course had my favorite vanilla wafer cookies. It immediately brought back memories of my grandmothers banana pudding which I haven't had in over 20 years. The smell, the taste, the texture were a definite reincarnate of hers.

White Chocolate Macadamia Cheesecake

Lastly, the White Chocolate Macadamia Cheesecake - talk about rich! It was delicious and perfect for sharing, in fact three to four people could easily share this 4'' size decadent dessert and probably still have some left over. Their cheesecake is exactly the way a cheesecake should be; dense, creamy and thick. Not only is the flavor excellent but it's topped high with white chocolate chunks and whole macadamias. Oddly enough we didn't try the brownies but I figure that gives us one more reason to return and of course provide you with an update.

I have to say I am so proud of LA, we have really become a foodies paradise and thankfully more restaurants, desserteries and cool concept themed places are popping up everywhere. If I were getting paid for all the blogging and eating I could do, I'd be well on my way to some serious dough (no pun intended). OK that was cheesy but I couldn't resist.

So to wrap up this sweet rant, Magnolia's is wonderful; they've got some interesting things in the works, one being curbside pickup - so you can call ahead and someone will bring out your order to your car. This is a great service idea especially in LA where parking in non existent (especially where they are located).

I definitely intend on revisiting if for no other reason than just to see how everything is when they're not so 'new' and have settled into a routine. :-) That to me is when you can really gauge how good a place is. Throw in some raunchy, demanding customers, a dash of long hours in front of a hot oven six days a week, a pinch of sarcasm from the boss on why you're not working hard enough and you've got a recipe for either disaster or some damn good pastries!

On to my next craving. :-)

Bricks and Scones (far from stones)

OK, I like so many others believe my mom makes the best (enter item here) in the world! In this case, it's true BUT I have found someone who can easily take the 1st place and 1/2 next to mums (come on she's my mom). I had the lucky fortune of stepping into Bricks and Scones today, lucky fortune because everywhere else was crowded and had no parking and some how I ended up down the street from them. I had been in once before but it was so brief that I didn't get a chance to fully appreciate this amazing space; but today I had time to come in, order, sit, blog and relax.

I have never seen a coffee/tea shop so well decorated, laid out, spacious and inviting. Starbucks and even Coffee bean could take a note from the Kim's; but you see that's just it, this is a family owned and operated business, daughter runs the cafe, dads in the office and mom...well like all great moms she takes care of feeding everyone. Mrs. Kim is literally up every morning @4:30 am baking all the desserts you see below.

Once they're sold that's it for the day and if you're lucky enough to come in before closing anything that's left is yours for 1/2 the price. This is their guarantee you're only being served the best and the freshest daily.

The shop decor feels more like you're in someones home, it's two levels with the top being the 'quiet area'. The 'quiet area', where I am residing as I write this, lives up to it's name aside from the sounds of nails hitting keyboards and spoons taping the sides of cups - this space is a great work spot. There are several desk equipped with it's own lamp, electrical outlet and depending on where you sit, window - as well as comfy love seats and big chairs. Everyone up here has their face buried in a book or intently watching their computer screens pretending to be productive on a Sunday.

Downstairs is where the party is, there is a large full patio in the front area with umbrellas at every table, wrought iron tables and tons of sitting. Vines and lush greens seclude you from the main street to the point that make you forget you're actually in a driveway and not in a fantasy courtyard. Past the coffee bar and ordering station is the lounge, here you'll find large sofas, chairs and a wrap around bar for those who come to work and socialize.

You can truly tell a lot of love and thought went into creating this space, this is not a cookie cutter nor a place you're bound to find on just any corner. In fact unless you know it's here you might just drive past it; there is limited signage out front and because the patio is covered you wouldn't notice people sitting outside even on a crowded day.

So, of course I had to order a variety of things and bring them home to share with my partner in crime and tasting. We shared a blueberry cream cheese croissant, chocolate chip croissant and blueberry scone with clotted cream and honey. Now the croissants were amazing, I loved the blueberry CC, mum nearly inhaled the chocolate chip but what we both were in awe over was the scone. Like I said in the beginning my mom is known across the country for a lot of things but one of them being is her scones. Unlike traditional scones (hard, dry, similar to baseballs), hers are also soft, moist and full of flavor. Many people have said that her scones were not scones because of the simple fact that they were enjoyable - tell me, how can this be a crime? Anyway, I digress Mrs. Kim's scones were excellent, they were warm, soft and packed with bursting blueberries. You could taste the salted butter, cream and to be honest adding the clotted cream and honey was almost to much. They were perfect without it. :-)

Ahh, by George I think I have found a new place to gather. It's time to assess the troops and prepare for what could be a long summer, with tea, pastries and a 'quiet area' to call my own.

FYI: B+S also caters to those with Gluten allergies - they have a very interesting bun called the Chewy Sesame Seed But - I didn't try it but as I looked around several people were diving into one, so it's bound to be good. Check out Bricks and Scones if you're in the Larchmont area and even if you're not - still come by. They could use your support, it's places like this we need more of to bring spice and uniqueness to our communities.

Group + Coupon = Groupon

A wonderful phenomenon has taken place, and its name is Groupon. In a time, where everyone is looking for the best deal, the sweetest opportunity and wanting to get the most out of their dollar; Groupon has stepped in to be our savior. Groupon (aka Groupon.com) is an online ‘coupon type’ site that features daily (Monday – Saturday) deals all across the world (They recently acquired a similar site based in the UK and are now able to broadcast worldwide). Groupon which is headquartered in Chicago has changed the world single handily. Making it possible for the average penny pinching John and Jane to once again have a life and indulge.

I am a huge fan of Groupon if you couldn’t tell, so much so that I have recently been elevated to the prestige elite level having over 2000 points (more on the point system later). I buy at least four a week depending on the deals and necessity (but mainly my desire to splurge). A great deal could be a $20 Groupon to your favorite Indian restaurant to enjoy $50 worth of food; or $35 for $80 worth of spa treatments at the local luxury day spa and yes I’ve even seen $150 for a two night stay at a five star boutique hotel including champagne and breakfast. Seriously does it really get any better?

Imagine if everything we needed could be handled with a Groupon? We’d all be gazillionaires! Ok, maybe that’s pushing it a bit. As great as Groupons are, they aren’t great for everything. Come on now, I have to give it to you real, the good and the not so good. I would easily say 90% of the businesses that advertise on Groupon are fantastic and have gone above and beyond out their way to accommodate and give you the best deal possible. The other 10% well, if you were to get one might put a bad taste in your mouth. Like anything that can sometimes seem too-good-to-be-true it’s best to check out the business before buying the service. In most cases you’ll have 24 hours to purchase the Groupon before the deal ends, leaving you plenty of time to check menus, reviews, customer feedback and maybe even do a drive-by to confirm the location. Even though you’re being offered a great deal (usually 40-70% savings) you still don’t want to buy something you know you’ll never use. Returns are a pain in the butt and with Groupon if you’re lucky you’ll only get a credit back to use on another purchase.

Oh yeah so the point system! The point system is great – basically each day you sign in to your account just to view the Groupon (not even buy one) you get (1) one point. If you purchase the Groupon you receive 50 points but if you’re one of the first few to purchase a Groupon when it first goes live you receive 150 points! The points add up and for every 100 you get a free $1 – these dollars are as good as cash and be put toward future Groupon buys.

Can you see why Groupon is so fantastic? Because of the success of Groupon it has of course spun many knock-offs, just like any great Louis Vuitton bag or Alexander McQueen dress, there’s always someone who has their version of it. Don’t be fooled! Check the site out and really see what they are offering. There is only ONE Groupon and so far it can not be duplicated.

Bento For Two Please

You see this is why it's so difficult to answer the age old question, "what's your favorite food?" I love it all, honestly!

So, mum and I were starving, it was kinda late (9ish pm) and we didn't feel like driving anywhere, so we decided to finally revisit the Japanese restaurant down the street. We tried Kino Sushi when we first moved to Hollywood, but they had recently renovated and expanded and we thought we would see if the food had improved as well. Much to our surprise we were in for a treat; we were immediately greeted by several hostesses and servers, everyone was friendly and eager to attend to us. The space itself is beautiful, they've easily doubled their original size and completely redone the menu. They now have a full sushi bar (with bar seating) and the menu includes hot and cold appetizers as well as assorted bentos and entrées.

I walked in knowing that I wanted chicken teriyaki but by the time I made it through the eight page menu I was unsure and confused. I couldn't decide between a baked sushi roll, an order of dumplings or still the chicken teriyaki. Fortunately it was the eighth page that answered my question; I've been curious about Bentos for a while now, I've seen pictures of them and people eating them at various Japanese restaurant but aside from that I just hadn't paid much attention.

Ordering a Bento box ended up being exactly what I wanted, I was able to get everything that I had fussed over earlier. I chose the spicy chicken teriyaki, with the chicken gyozas (dumplings), the spicy tuna roll and an order of miso soup and side salad came with it. This was more food than I realized but at $11.95 not a bad deal. Mum and I could have easily shared one of these (they're that large) and perhaps now we know for next time. Mum ended up ordering pretty much the same thing except she optioned for the Baked Crunchy Shrimp roll (my new favorite).

We rounded the evening with Fried Green Tea Ice Cream and Strawberry and Coffee Mochi. One word, complete. The fried ice cream is actually green tea ice cream inside a deep fried tempura coated shell (I don't know how they do it), the ice cream was fantastic, sweet and just a subtle hint of green tea. The coating was my favorite, I'm not one of those die-hards that feels everything is better fried, (I believe everything is better with butter) but in this case, fried was a great choice. Mochi is a very traditional Japanese rice cake; made of glutinous rice pounded into paste and then molded into a shape around a scoop of ice cream. Think petits fours and marzipan, but gummy. The mochi were cute and bite size, the coffee was my favorite.

In the end this was a lot of food for sitting but as usual we couldn't make our minds up and if this were going to be our last meal we wanted to know that we enjoyed everything possible on the menu.

The only complaint I have about Kino is that aside from the immediate attention you receive upon walking in, you're pretty much left on your own after that. We had a hard time getting our servers' attention when we were done eating our dinner and when she did return (check in hand) we weren't even given the option of ordering dessert. When we asked to see the menu again for dessert she sped away and took even longer to return for our new order. Maybe they just haven't gotten around to customer service training along with the renovation and other changes. In any case, if you can put that aside for a great meal then it's worth it but if you're looking for the whole experience then maybe you might want to find another Bento place. This really comes down to how hungry you might be.

2500 Year Old Ice Cream

Exotic Ice Cream, 2500 years in the making definitely leaves a little something on your tongue, doesn't it? To begin let me just say, I was completely ignorant when it came to ice cream. I had NO idea that there were different kinds of ice cream from all over the world - especially in Turkey! I love Turkish coffee, food and culture but had never heard of Turkish ice cream, should I really have been surprised?

Mashti Malone's was a complete and utter surprise, I came home from a stifling day battling the heat and traffic, to my Mom hurriedly telling me there was something that I had to watch on TV. I plopped down on my couch and preceded to watch FoodCrafters, a new show on the Cooking Channel. The show was all about sweets (a topic I could easily write a thesis on) and the first sweets company was Mashti Malone's. Turns out they were literally five minutes from our house down a street I travel twice a day. We immediately made a bee line to the location for some relief from the hot day.

Mashti Malone's is quite deceiving, from the outside it looks old, run down and basically like it's been there for years - well they actually have. The company itself has been at this location since 1980 but the recipes and strange concoctions they make have genuinely been thousands of years in the making.

The ice cream is fantastic (they also serve sorbet but that's another visit), creamy, full of flavor, intensely unique and fresh! Fresh is an understatement- all the flavors are made daily in the store from the freshest ingredients available. If you get there to late, you might miss out on your favorite (especially if its everyone's favorite).

What separates MM from the masses are several key points:

I have never tasted anything like this before, the flavors are so rich, so intense, in every spoonful you know that nothing is held back. There are whole chunks of nuts and real fruit in every bowl. The Saffron Rosewater (which also has pistachios) is nothing you could ever imagine. Actually made from saffron, cumin, rose + orange water, and an assortment of other spices (trade secrets) this ice cream is not for children. As the reporter on the FoodCrafers show said, "this is an ice cream parlor for adults".

The Turkish coffee ice cream is bitter from the coffee but has hints of chocolate that smooth it out, the combination of the Turkish coffee with the Saffron Rosewater was such a great combination. The two worked together and didn't over power in my mouth. My senses swirled with utter delight and satisfaction, was definitely had.

Mom had the Turkish coffee + Praline 'n' Almond - to be honest this one may actually be my favorite they're both so amazing it's hard to choose. The Praline 'n' Almond is crunchy, sweet, caramely and is also a great combination with the bitterness of the coffee.

What makes this experience so wonderful is that I don't eat ice cream - I am actually lactose intolerant and for me to decide to forge forward and delve head first into a cup of ice cream must mean that it's not only good but WORTH it. Mashti Malone's definitely is.

I can see without a doubt why this place is a favorite among Angelenos and also why they haven't changed a thing in nearly three decades. Simply put, they don't have to. They are wonderful just the way they are.

He spent all the money he had on the lease and the equipment inside the store. There wasn't enough money left over to change the entire sign, so he only changed half of it. I do believe I have died and gone to heaven. I truly believe I have left my body (and possibly mind) and traveled to another dimension - where Dulce de Leche is king and whatever it ask of me I must obey. Words-can't-quite-form and my feet can't feel the floor. I have entered an altered state and have no desire to return to planet earth. Wait, I see a sign, it's becoming clearer it reads.......Nonna's Empanadas. Oh, I haven't traveled far at all. I would never have guessed such pleasure was closer than I realized.

I was greeted with smiles and a warmth, not just from the hot summer day but from people genuinely loving what they do, what they make and wanting to share it all with you. I had passed by Nonna's a week ago, and made plans to come back and check it out (it's my job after all!). Today I happened to be in the area and thought 'this time is as good as any'. Parking was easy and the little shop that's only been open for a month was eager to accept me. Mario, the owner is a darling older gentleman, with a charm and a smirk that lets you know he was trouble in his day. "Hola Senorita, como estas?" he greets me, I respond in my limited Spanish,"muy bien senor, gracious. Y tu?", this immediately sends him rabbling more Spanish to me, I quickly stop him, letting him knowing my Spanish skill level is still quite beginners. He smiled and began explaining to me his offerings (in english).

Everything looked beautiful, the spread upfront is mostly delicate pastries of filo dough, Dulce de Leche and butter, an assortment of mini croissants, cookies and turnovers. Alex, the head chef was also upfront and when I asked what the nutella type substance was in between a cookie, his eyes perked and he excitedly told me it was Dulce de Leche, but that I must taste it to experience it, words alone can't describe it. He hurried to the back and return moments later with a small saucer of Dulce and a miniature spoon. Urging me to sample, he didn't have to ask me twice. As I brought the spoon to my lips and a heaping spoonful of Dulce touched my tongue I could feel my eyes roll back and my knees go weak. It was amazing, pure butter, cream and sugar but smooth like honey and light as air. It melted in my mouth and I was left with a sweet memory of it. It took every ounce of will power not to grab the plate and lick the remainder; I didn't want to scare Alex or Mario, we had only just met and I knew I definitely wanted to return.

As I sampled the caramely delight, Alex explained to me the process of making it. How someone literally stands and stirs for two hours the hot pot of butter, cream and sugar until the perfect consistency and temperature are reached. All of their ingredients are sourced from Argentina, they themselves are Argentinean, oh yeah this is an Empanadas joint. Pastries are not the only good things to enjoy here, the Empanadas are by far the best I've ever had. I learned a while back that many South American countries have their versions of Empanadas but in my book Argentina know what they're talking about. I ordered a beef w/Jalapeños and a Chicken Empanada they were flaky, and packed with meat, onions, garlic and a savory blend of seasonings. My mouth is watering just thinking about them. And, to think I had just considered giving up bread for a bit and cutting my sugar intake. Oh well there's always Monday.

Nonna's was everything and more, that I didn't know to expect. I am absolutely blown away by the service, the freshness and quality of everything I tried. Fortunately, I couldn't stay and ordered everything to go, Alex was kind enough to throw in a few extra sweets just to make sure I didn't miss trying anything and besides everything is better when it's shared. So that's what I did. Mum and I sat on our 3rd floor fire escape retreat, listening to Spanish music, sipping tea and feasting on our Argentinean pastries; watching the traffic go by and the Hollywood crowds; for a moment we escaped to a small province in Buenos Aires where the streets were alive with people dancing tango in the streets and enjoying their mid day siesta (just as we all should).

Hmm, ok time for another bite. :-)

I must confess, there is something new in my life that is slowly taking over first place as my favorite thing. Although I need food and drink to live, it is Tango that's becoming what sustains me. I am absolutely head over heels in love with this dance. I began taking lessons about three months ago and after the first class I knew I had found something that I could and wanted to devote my time and energy to. For the first time (in a long time) I have found something that takes me out of my head, something that requires precision, presence and concentration. The steps and dance are not only beautiful and powerful but almost become a meditation, you almost enter this trance-like state when you're fully in the moment. My world has changed.

I have been an advent yoga and pilates person for years and have dabbled into dance, here and there (salsa, belly dance, jazz, hip hop) oddly enough I have always loved dance more than anything but I see now it was fear that kept me from really diving into it. Perhaps a fear of how wonderful it would actually be, fear that this really could be what I've been searching for and once I surrendered myself to it I wouldn't have to look any further. Well, I have surrendered and since Saturday I haven't looked back. So, what happened Saturday?

Saturday was my first Milonga, a Milonga is generally used to describe a place or event where (in this case) Tango dancers 'unite' and celebrate the dance. They usually go on for several hours into the evening and dancers of all levels dance together, share, mingle and enjoy the music. This Milonga was held at Oxygen Tango, the place where I also practice. The festivities began at 8p with a beginners intro class and light food and wine. Around 10p the room seemed to explode and the energy was thick with passion, and fire (the room was really hot too, so that might explain the fire part). There were easily 100 people that attended and all though the space is relatively small we all made due and danced to our hearts content.

Traditionally men and women will make eye contact across the room and this signals that you wish to dance. you then walk up to each other, embrace and move into the first step. I tried things that night I hadn't even learned in class yet and somehow my feet knew what to do and I completely trusted my partners and the journey they wanted to take me on. Normally a control freak it was amazing to finally let go and just be. I didn't think, I didn't look at my feet and I didn't concern myself with anything other than just being there for my partner. God, it was amazing. I know it may seem as if I'm putting a lot on a simple dance that people have been doing for years; but the truth is - this isn't a dance for everyone and the people that I've met have the most interesting stories of how they found Tango and the ways its improved and/or changed their lives and their relationships.

Being in that room, you couldn't help but feel the love, feel the acceptance, feel that there was absolutely no pretense, no ego, there was nothing but pure passion and dance. I immediately came home that night and decided that whatever it takes I will keep dancing, learning and improving. I will make time for this in my life no matter what because it brings me joy. I now have one more love and thing that fulfills me and gives me peace. Isn't this what we're all looking for, in one way or another?

Milongas are typically held weekly - monthly and truly whether you're just starting or been dancing for years (but for some reason never ventured to a Milonga) you should definitely check it out. Borekas and 3rd street

Who knew that all I needed in this world was food to be happy. Who knew that walking through a french store and a gallery of exotic foods, sweets and yes even hot sauce could arouse my senses and bring me utter delight. Who knew?

This blog is going to be a series of on-going trips to the Original Farmer's Market @3rd Street. I know you're probably thinking, "my god, this woman has an obsession with Farmers' Markets!" but I promise you it's a healthy one and this market unlike the thousands of others in this city is more than just vendors, hummus, soaps and jazz bands.

The 3rd Street FM is a staple in this city, it originated in 1934 and is still going strong 76 years later. There are the day vendors; who are your typical tent vendors who lease a space for several hours on certain days (just like at a regular farmers market). Then there are the permanent vendors, who are there, well like the name would suggest, permanently. These vendors actually rent space of various sizes inside the building, they have full fledged stores, restaurants and bars. The selection is spectacular and the aromas, well I haven't quite found the words for those yet.

Few would believe me but this next statement is absolutely true - as long as I've lived in LA I've been to 3rd a hand full of times and to the Farmers' Market section once (today being my second). I had no idea what I was missing, but as I get older I realize the best things are also those that you wait for.

Today, Mum and I tackled 3rd street, this was a completely spontaneous opportunity for us, I love when this happens. Upon stepping foot into the market, I was immediately drawn to Moishe's, a Turkish restaurant specializing in tender beef and chicken kebabs, well seasoned rice and my new personal favorite, Borekas!

Borekas! Borekas! Borekas! many of you may know these delicate flatbreads as Börek (also burek, boureka, brik, piroq and other variants). They are as many different names as well as types. When I actually Googled Borekas, the recipes and styles that came up most frequently were more like pastries and similar to Baklava; but what I experienced today was no where near that syrupy, nutty delight.

We ordered the Spinach + Cheese, imagine if spanakopita and naan got together and had a baby, Borekas would be it! This dish was truly a carb-filled fantasy, long stringy cheese, perfectly seasoned, soft bread and just enough spinach to make you think it's healthy. The recipe begins with the dough, which is very thin and rolled out flat, stewed spinach and mozzarella cheese is then added to the center. The flatbread is then put into a stone fire heath and baked until the edges fluff creating almost a wall around the cheese and spinach blend. All sorts of toppings can be exchanged, things like ham, bbq chicken, eggs, bacon, the list is almost endless.
I'm actually very interested in their breakfast Borekas that has bacon and sunny-side up eggs baked on it; I can't wait to start a morning off with that.

So, to wrap this post let me just repeat that Moishe's is a definite must try on your next visit to the market and if you need some company, I'm your girl!

A Night at the W

What a wonderful evening.

Hello all, tonight's blog will be short and sweet, I just wanted to share with you an amazing evening I just had.

I surprised mum with an evening out under the stars, we went to the W Hotel in Westwood, CA for their Sunday evening outdoor movie event. Tonight's film, Julie/Julia - one of my favorites. The film especially touched my heart this time around and I found many similarities across all of our paths (Me, Julie and the infamous Julia) we are all in search of what brings us joy, for what we feel is our calling and what we feel so passionately about, that it drives us to jump out of bed every morning and dream about at night. As Julia said, "I think about food all the time, I do, I even dream about it....." In a way I feel the same; discovering my love of food, of wine, of butter gave my life meaning when I was certain that there was none. Discovering a love of writing and realizing that I too have a voice has given me a new found passion and strength. Unlike Julie, I can't say that "Julia saved me", or that she me pulled from the ocean" but I can say I know the feeling and when I close my eyes I can still taste that one meal that changed it all for me. YUM!

Vinyl Soul

I use to fear we were a world becoming complacent, settling for whatever will do. We didn’t question our surroundings, or why certain things were given to us and others are not. We accepted and allowed mediocre talent to clog our airways and steal our movie screens without ever demanding better. What would have to happen for us to change that, how could we once again get back to what is real and not doctored up? Away from the cookie cutter molds of Brittany Spears wanna-bes, pre-tween Justin Timberlake’s and the so called hard asses like Lil Wayne and similar rappers.

I love music, dance and just a great performance; but I am tired of the same ten song rotation on my radio stations and the same music videos on constant loop on TV. They have forced me to go on the hunt for real talent; to step outside of the box and try other avenues for entertainment.

Fortunately I am not alone in my quest, thanks to shows like America’s Got Talent, So You Think You Can Dance and of course, American Idol we have become inundated with opportunities to see what else lies out there. (Does anyone remember Star Search?).

For the first time (in perhaps a long time) we, the consumer are asked, ‘what do you think?’ Instead of the big music guys and studio execs telling us what we should be buying and listening to. Good music and talent are at our fingertips and we hold the control button, or do we?

I am amazed by the level of talent found on our streets. From our subways, parks, promenades even farmers’ markets; I believe these are some of the worlds most talented men, women and kids, untouched, un-jaded and more importantly unsigned.

I am a fan of these shows and I appreciate what they are trying to do, give ordinary people (talented people) a world stage to perform and showcase their gifts which ordinarily would not have been available. I sit back and imagine that if I had the money, the resources and the capacity to help these individuals achieve their dreams I would in a heart beat; but how many of them actually get an opportunity past the show?

I had the pleasure of meeting Vinyl Soul at the Yamashiro Farmers’ Market on Thursday; they are one of those groups you listen to and ask why? Why haven’t they been picked up? No one had even noticed that the other band had stopped performing or that they’d set up until JB took to the mic; he was captivating- his vocals were that of a man twice his age, mature and experienced.

Immediately he grabbed everyone’s attention and we hung unto his words for the whole set. They were a breath of fresh air with their soulful tones and Spanish/English lyrics.www.myspace.com/vinylsoul They had a groove and to be honest it was completely unexpected, at first glance I would never have guessed those sounds would have come from them. The lyrics were beautiful, heartfelt and honest; I later found out that they also wrote most of their own music and songs; truly another gift.

I have no doubt that all the artist that currently have ‘made it’, once came from humble beginnings and were once starving artist, but there is nothing like the fire and passion you see in the eyes of those who are just getting started or who have been at for years waiting for their break (their turn), who everyday get out there rain or shine, no entourage, no crew just them and the pavement, fighting for their dream.

I never had a desire to be a performer, actress or musician (except in my shower), I’ve always believed that that desire alone is a special gift. To know that 99% of the time you’re going to be rejected, denied and looked over; to know that all you have is a dream and a hope that one day someone will notice just how talented you always believed you were, takes guts, courage and a will power I don’t think many of us have.

I admire and respect those that chase their dreams day in and day out, who grow and become stronger every time they are turned down and even more committed to seeing their dreams come to pass. I admire you and wish for you everything that you want in this world.

Sweet Dreams!

So what's a girl to do when she's got a killer sweet tooth and nothing in site to soothe it? Well, she has to pick up her britches and head out to find something, of course. My first choice is ALWAYS cupcakes, growing up in a house full of chocolate and having a parent who bakes brownies for a living, you realize pretty quickly that not just anything will do. I believe that I know good desserts when I taste them and I know GREAT desserts without a doubt; but when you can combine great taste and a great price, well that's just a recipe for success.

So, first stop Hansen's Bakery. Before I begin I must say that I have been an advent Sprinkles lover for years and until now, no one and I mean NO ONE could come close. This is of course after trying just about every cupcake place I could find (and just fell into) from the top to the bottom of California. Recently however, on the suggestion of my favorite Target Checkout boy, I was informed of a well kept secret cupcake location. I was told that these cupcakes were not only large, flavorful, had creamy frosting BUT (drum roll) were only $1.00 each. OMG, could this be? Something must be wrong with them? I think my Target Foodie bumped his head.

No, Hansen's Bakery is just that and a bag of chips. The cupcakes were wonderful; mummie and I shared three delicious and as close to perfect cupcakes. My only mark is that the cupcakes are kept in a refrigerated case, which means they are cold and the frosting is stiff but after about five minutes in the sun they were chilled, slightly warming and ready to eat.

We ordered the Lemon with Coconut, Red Velvet (because everyone claims to have the best) w/White Chocolate Chips and a Chocolate w/Chocolate sprinkles- flavors you can't really go wrong with and usually are always good. Hansen's doesn't get as creative with the flavors as say Sprinkles, Crumbs or Cupcake & Co, they stick to the basics. This is not a problem, like the old saying if it ain't broke don't fix it. Hansen's stays true to this.

The cupcakes are only a $1.00 because they are made from the left over cake batter from cakes made that day. So there really isn't much *extra* work needed to go into the process; they're basically making use of what would have been wasted. Think of them as 'Green' or 'Eco' friendly Cupcakes. :-)

The cupcakes really are that good, and at a $1.00 a piece you really wonder how did we get so far from a cupcake just being a cupcake.

P.S. You know what would really set this off? A cup of my Australian Cappuccino (Longshot!).

Back Story: Hansen's Cakes is over seven generations old and has been continuously passed down from generation to generation within the family, currently Patrick Hansen runs this sweet joint. Hansen's Bakery has been a Los Angeles staple for many years and countless celebrities, athletes, people in high places and us commoners have depended on them for all our cake fulfilling needs. You may have even seen Patrick and his team making special appearances on the Tori & Dean show (Birthday cakes for the kids) and The Kardashians (Khloe + Omars Wedding).

Flamenco in Silverlake

Never underestimate the power of community. Community tables that is. Tonight was one written in the stars and my wildest dreams came true (on a much more local level). I've been fantasizing of days spent sleeping in and nights wondering the streets of Barcelona in search of tantalizing tapas and soul-wrenching Spanish guitar. I've yearned for dinners surrounded by good friends, international friends, with food, wine, music and conversation. Tonight within a three mile radius I managed to get at least 80% of that.

The place is El Cid (in Silverlake off Sunset) and the theme, purely Spanish. We were wined and dined (and sipped Cava and Sangria), we were entertained with the most beautiful Spanish Guitar, singing and Live Flamenco dancing. The dancers, oh the dancers; you could feel the power of their thighs with each stomp, you could see the passion on their faces as the melody seemed to be driving them. It was truly magical.

This was my first time experiencing Flamenco up close and personal, and trust me watching it on TV is no comparison. My mom said it best, she said that a person who can do something like that [dance], really well and so passionately has to be completely present. There is no time or room for thinking about your to-do list or what's happening tomorrow. They are completely focused and in the zone.

I recently took up Tango and I have to admit that statement is true, my teacher says learning [tango] is like learning a new language but once you understand it, once it becomes a part of you, then you no longer have to think about, you just move. The dancers tonight were wonderful and there is no doubt in my mind that they love, breathe, and dream of this music. Not only is it apart of their culture, it is apart of them.

Community - I found myself surrounded by some really beautiful people tonight, we weren't long time friends, neighbors or colleagues. We didn't go to school together or even have a hobby in common (that I know of), we simply were lovers of Spanish food, Spanish music and exploring all this city has to offer. Some of us had been to El Cid before the rest (like myself) were newbies.

We all shared a large communal table, our seating pre-arranged by the host and one by one we opened up and turned an unfamiliar event into a soirée. We dined, talked, exchanged names, interest and then the show began; we all watched with amazement and were literally stunned by the sheer force and power of the dancers performance. We were now connected in a way that none of us expected. This is what I dream about.

I have to admit, although I still have yet to touch España soil, it was nice to experience this and to know that it's possible so close to home.

The show ended and we said our goodbyes; exchanging emails and Facebook accounts, twitter ID's and blog addresses. In a city like LA, something like this doesn't happen often enough, but you treasure it when it does. I can't say we'll all stay in touch but we definitely will remember this night fondly, and if by chance we should meet again in another Spanish dive or small Spanish town we'll know we have a friend to toast Sangria and enjoy the sounds.

Sweet acid jazz plays in the background and the air is thick with laughter, camaraderie and a sincere feeling of community. What is this place, you’d never believe me; it’s Yamashiro’s Farmers Market.

Who knew a market could consist of more than just produce and veggies, more than Greek olives and 10 types of hummus. This farmer’s market is more of a weekly celebration of the senses and a gathering of those looking for a European experience.

The most wonderful thing about this market are the vendors, truly a unique blend that give this shindig, spice and character. My favorites by far are:

Longshot – Australian Espresso Bar; his coffee is smooth, rich, slightly sweet and clean. I am not a coffee drinker by any means but I can truly appreciate his cups and have become a fan. I never knew coffee could be so creamy and ironically he uses very little milk. There is no bitter after taste like many Starbucks and Coffee Bean drinks leave and you finish with this absolute feeling of satisfaction. If you want an instant teleportation into some small foreign coffee shop, order an espresso or chocolate mocha and you’ll know what I mean. Mark Baird is the owner and operator and a genuinely sweet and passionate man. Relocating here from Australia he came with a dream and a purpose to show us Americans that we don’t know a thing about good coffee. I have to submit and proclaim he is right. In just a short time, Mark has grown his mobile espresso bar into quite the force to reckon with and I feel this is only the tip of the sugar cube of what’s to come.

Bulgarini Gelato - OK, five words, Chocolate Sea Salt + Vanilla Hazelnut! Two completely different flavors that in some cosmic universe (of my choice) were destined to be together. You could not have two more perfect partners than these two. The chocolate is bitter with a salty edge but then BAM the Vanilla Hazelnut waltz's in and smooths everything out. It's literally a celebration in my $4.00 cup.

Bulgarini was recently written about in Tasting Table, in the article they state that their gelato is made from goats milk. This is not correct, only one of the flavors is (not featured here), the rest are of the standard cow's milk; but honestly this changes nothing. It is still fantastic and worth every ounce.

There is something about gelato that is much more special than ice cream and yogurt, perhaps it's just the fact that you're eating something that sounds exotic, 'Gelato' (in a strong Italian accent) or maybe it's the velvety texture and blend of such exotic flavors. Whatever the case, gelato is gift from the Italians and is meant to be enjoyed with good friends, good coffee and a good attitude; Buon appetito.

Yamsada - Last on my list of food favorites is Yamasada and not for any particular reason other than I prefer to eat my dessert first then have dinner (you know take care of the important meal first). Yamasada is Yamashiro's booth where they serve the most amazing mini Tacos in Hollywood. To be honest, I scarfed them down before I could take a photo and I'm not really sure which was which but I can tell you that I had one of each taco.

I am ashamed, but let this be proof to you just how good they are. You can purchase (3) mini tacos (and they are mini) with a good helping of chips, salsa and some kick ass guacamole ($9). All freshly made by the restaurant for your tasting pleasure.

The great thing about this meal is that all three tacos would pair beautifully with any of the wines available for tasting and buying. You can't go wrong. Although this is not the only booth to get food from, it is definitely the most popular and for good reason. The food is fresh, delicious and sharing friendly.

This market is much more than just a Farmer's Market, its more of a large get together of friends and family. This is now my fifth time going and I can definitely pick out the regulars and see familiar faces. The community tables make it easier to sit, eat and share a bottle of wine (which you can pick up for sale at the bar or wine booth). The music is perfect for dancing, or just relaxing and taking in; but the view is what will take your breath away. I have yet to be there on a truly clear, crisp day/night but from what I've seen, it could be worth the wait.

There are few places (venues) in this city that offer you such an array and to top it off it is affordable, easy to get to, and family friendly. At a time, when we're (unfortunately) watching our wallets and keeping in check our budgets, gems like this don't come around enough.

The sun has set on this glorious evening, and the market slows to a close. I can’t say enough that I’m so glad I live here, in this city of lights, smog and celebrity because even in the midst of all of that there is a sanctuary if you can find it, here in the Hollywood Hills. There is truly no place like LA, and frankly no place I’d rather be.

Summertime Music

What is it about summer music, Jason Mraz, Bob Marley and Michael Buble? All those wonderful, fun, light-hearted artist.

I find it amazing how music can tele-port you. You could be having the crappiest day ever and your song comes on and suddenly you feel upbeat and you're instantly in a better mood. Music just makes everything better, it's really crazy how that works.

I love how every time Jason Mrazs' song, I'm Yours comes on:

"I've been spending way too long checking my tongue in the mirror
And bending over backwards just to try to see it clearer
But my breath fogged up the glass
And so I drew a new face and laughed
I guess what I'm be saying is there ain't no better reason
To rid yourself of vanity and just go with the seasons
It's what we aim to do
Our name is our virtue"

I can't help but smile and imagine myself playing in the ocean, running between the surf and drinking coconut water with someone I love.

I could be in a restaurant and Michael Buble will come on over the speakers and I'll be reminded of all my past loves, I don't think about the pain or hurt or why we aren't together; I think about all the passion and good times and that love that I felt fills my heart again, how at that moment everything felt like it was going to be more than just OK and I knew I was safe.

I love Nina Simone and every time she comes on I feel like the sexiest woman in the room. I feel like she's singing to me and giving me instructions on just how to be "that chick", 'Put Some Sugar in My Bowl' is her telling her man exactly what she wants and how. If that's not sexy I don't know what is. It's just that sensuality, that magic in her voice, it makes you feel like you're something else.

Music is so, so powerful and it really doesn't matter what type of music you're into, if you feel it, that music literally gets inside you, inside your bones and just radiates through every cell in your body. For those three minutes and thirty seconds or longer you almost feel invincible, you feel as if nothing could touch you.

I love music. I love that I am fortunate to have my life filled with beautiful music. Even when I can't travel or my days don't work out exactly the way I had hoped, music is my salvation and my vehicle to a place of my wildest dreams. To live without music should be a crime and to live without music in your heart should be impossible.

Cool, Refreshing, Fraiche!

I didn't think it was actually possible to taste heaven, but somehow by way of a little french restaurant called Fraiche I found my way there. My mom and I went there for lunch yesterday, we happen to be in the Santa Monica area and thought it'd be nice to stop in.

Fraiche, is absolutely lovely. The decor is simple yet elegant and although we arrived 20 minutes before lunch ended there was still quite the crowd. Businessmen in suits discussing deals over pizza, ladies dishing the dirt over a dirty martini and sweet couples who just wondered in off the street occupied the corners. French music, Nina Simone and Michael Buble serenaded us while the staff took extra special care of our needs.

The Staff was limited to a Maitre d' and server but there was really no need for more. Our food arrived promptly and was everything I could have imagined and more.

I ordered the MONKFISH “FRANCAISE” w/Sautéed spinach, Yukon gold potato puree,

Shallots, white wine - $21

and mom had the STEAK FRITES flat iron steak, w/hand cut fries, bordelaise - $22

Let me just begin with the Monkfish, honestly I'm not even sure what a Monkfish is or how it looks and frankly I probably don't want to know - but I do know that it is by far the most incredible, delicious, tender, juiciest fish I've ever had the pleasure to eat. Considering it's a fish, the texture was more like a very tender chicken sauteed in LOTS of butter and rolled around your tongue so delicately. This meal was absolutely fantastic from beginning to end.

I filled my first fork full with a piece of Monkfish, potatoes and a generous helping of Spinach - and literally felt as if I had just experienced a party of sensations in my mouth. Upon recommendation from the Maitre d', I paired the dish with an Italian Sauvignon Blanc and it was 'Parfait' (perfect in French). The smoothness and hints of peach from the wine worked amazingly well with the butter wine sauce surrounding the fish.

The Steak Frites was just as commendable, although I prefer my steak medium, mom requested medium well. It was tender and the rub gave it excellent flavor (peppery and smokey). This was a great lunch time choice as the sides were hand cut fries. The dish filled you but you didn't finish feeling like you consumed a small cow.

It was easy to go back to work after this meal, we were beyond satisfied physically, emotionally and spiritually. I do believe I had a spiritual experience with my Monkfish.

I can not say enough about Fraiche, and would recommend this place in a heart beat. The Santa Monica location just opened recently (their first location being in Culver City). The owners own some of LA's finest restaurants and this one is really no exception. I love their concepts and in my opinion its rare to find a group that is good at so many different types of themes.

I am looking forward to experiencing more from this restaurant group and having more 'spiritual' experiences with a meal.

It is a great book to start off with and it's by none other than the fabulous Julia Child. Perhaps you can make a meal for some friends and then enjoy the film, Julie & Julia for dessert.
